The Great White Hope - $12.99 Although the characters’ names were changed, The Great White Hope was a thinly veiled account of the trials and tribulations of boxer Jack Johnson, based on the play by Howard Sackler and directed by Martin Ritt. James Earl Jones stars as boxing great Jack Jefferson, who defeats Frank Bardy Larry Pennell in a Reno, Nevada bout to become the world’s first black heavyweight champion. After crossing a state line with his white girlfriend Eleanor (Jane Alexander in her feature debut), however, Jack is arrested and tried under the miscegenation-barring Mann Act. Found guilty and sentenced to three years in prison, Jack escapes and leaves the U.S., but he’s dogged by his now bad reputation and can’t get honest work as a fighter. Offered his freedom from criminal charges if he’ll agree to a fixed fight in Cuba that will restore the title to a white contender, Jack refuses and Eleanor commits suicide, their life on the run overwhelming her. Great White Death [LP] $23.98 Great White Death, the last Whitehouse effort for Come Organisation, differs greatly from some of their earlier albums. The instrumental parts of the songs are not played on such extreme levels as before; however, the vocals of William Bennett are unusually dynamic and intense. Songs such “We’ve Got the Power,” “I’m Coming up Your Ass,” and “You Don’t Have to Say Please,” for example, have a low bass drone on the background, while Bennett stretches his voice from quiet whispering to high-pitched feedback screaming. Some might consider this an old and exhausting example of polarization, but as is usual for Whitehouse, William Bennett has such a strong sense of dynamics that his vocals still sound fresh and honest. And even though the songs mentioned before might be the only standout tracks of the album, Great White Death is still a very strong album as a whole. Because of its nature (emphasis on vocals), it can’t be recommended as an introduction to Whitehouse’s music, but it sure is a treat to their old fans. ~ Antti J. Ravelin |

The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights - $16.99 Ever since the Detroit-bred duo the White Stripes rose to fame on the strength of their 2001 album White Blood Cells, they’ve tirelessly toured the world, and in 2007, when the group hit the road in support of the album Icky Thump, leader Jack White decided their previous tours had shortchanged the nation of Canada and they should do something about it. The White Stripes set up an ambitious Canadian tour that found them visiting every province and territory in the nation, and White and drummer Meg White also set up a number of surprise appearances along the way, ranging from an impromptu acoustic show on a city bus to a few tunes at a community center for Innuit elders.
