Modern Marvels: Sears Tower - $19.99 The history of the engineering masterpiece originally designed as the Sears Corporation headquarters is explored in this installment of the History Channel’s Modern Marvels series. At the time the Sears Tower was designed, it was one of the most ambitious construction projects ever conceived. Chicago was a city already renowned for its spectacular architecture, so the designers needed to ensure that their building would be easily distinguishable from the remarkable buildings that surrounded it. The result was a building that changed the face of urban architecture. Now viewers can finally find out exactly how the Sears Tower was erected, and how it is successfully maintained decades after it originally changed the face of the Chicago skyline. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

The Electric Horseman - $7.99 A cowboy-turned-huckster unexpectedly finds love as he tries to regain his self-respect in this romantic comedy drama. Sonny Steele (Robert Redford) is a one-time rodeo star whose career as a cowboy has ground to a halt. He makes a good living as a spokesman for Ranch Breakfast, a sugar-coated cereal for kids, but he’s lost most of his self-respect in the process; his boss, corporate mogul Hunt Sears (John Saxon), considers him a property rather than a human being, and Sonny has developed a serious problem with alcohol. Sears’ cereal company is negotiating a highly profitable merger with another firm and brings Sonny to Las Vegas for a publicity stunt, in which Sonny, wearing a garish cowboy outfit complete with blinking lights, will ride on-stage at Caesar’s Palace aboard prize-winning thoroughbred stallion Rising Star. When Sonny discovers Sears’ men have drugged the horse so that it will be able to walk on an injured leg, he’s appalled, and he rides Rising Star off the stage at Caesar’s and into the Nevada desert, looking for grazing land where he and the horse can heal their wounds. Sears is shocked to discover that Sonny has run off with a 12 million dollars, and he realizes that Sonny knows enough to make his firm look very bad in the press, potentially scotching the merger. Sears files charges against Sonny and posts a reward for Rising Star’s safe return, though he implies that it wouldn’t bother him if Sonny died in the rescue attempt. Hallie Martin (Jane Fonda), a television journalist covering Sonny’s Vegas appearance, is convinced that something is fishy and manages to catch up with him in the desert; as Hallie tries to get Sonny to tell her his story, the has-been cowboy and the city-girl reporter fall in love. The Electric Horseman also stars Valerie Perrine and Willie Nelson; the country & western star made his screen debut in this film and has a very memorable line about tequila and trailer hitches. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Four on the Floor $10.99 Dag Nasty: Roger Marbury (vocals, bass); Dave Smalley (vocals); Dale Nixon (guitars); Colin Sears (drums).Engineers: Donnell Cameron, Joe Pecarillo, Serious Bob.Recorded at Westbeach Recorders, Hollywood, California.Composers: Dag Nasty; Harper; Garratt; U.K. Subs.Personnel: Dave Smalley, Roger Marbury (vocals); Dale Nixon (guitar); Colin Sears (drums).Engineers: Donnell Cameron; Serious Bob; Joe Peccerillo.Recording information: Westbeach Recorders, Hollywood, CA.Photographer: Bob Reed.Unknown Contributor Role: Dag Nasty.Various members of the now defunct emocore originals Dag Nasty reunited after a four-year split to produce an album in true punk fashion. Recorded in about two weeks and produced by Epitaph mastermind Brett Gurewitz, Four on the Floor found Dag Nasty drawing from their influential past to give die-hard fans an updated taste of the positive-minded punk they spearheaded in the ’80s alongside fellow Dischord bands Minor Threat, Soulside, and Fugazi, to name a few. The album’s liner notes referenced the fact that this was a one-off, semi-coincidental occurrence, and this spontaneous resurrection captured the early fun and fury of Dag Nasty in their glory. Key members Dave Smalley, Colin Sears, and Roger Maybury lent authenticity to the effort, and due to his contract while in Junkyard, Brian Baker could not use his real name during this “reunion” record. Humorously he went under the pseudonym “Dale Nixon,” but make no mistake about it – that is Baker playing guitar on this record. Gurewitz’s production sometimes fell short of representing Dag Nasty’s true musical voice, occasionally sounding a bit thin for hardcore. But on tracks like “Million Days” and “S.F.S.,” Dag Nasty managed to recapture their original musical intensity and simultaneously spotlighted Dave Smalley’s continued growth as a writer. “We Went Wrong” revisited staple Dag Nasty themes of frustration and betrayed trust, and sounded as aggressive and fresh as any of their early work. The spirit of spontaneity showed through on the speedy but ultimately goofy “Roger,” and the raucous cover of the U.K. Subs’ classic “Lie Down and Die” paid respect to their punk influences. Four on the Floor wasn’t necessarily essential for casual fans of the genre, but it definitely provided Dag Nasty diehards with a revisited but worthy glimpse into their short-lived but fiery career. ~ Paul Henderson |

The Black Torment - $14.99 This staid British thriller stars John Turner as 18th-century nobleman Sir John Fordyce, whose blissful honeymoon holiday is cut brutally short by angry locals who accuse him of raping a woman from the village. Worse, they claim to have seen the ghost of his first wife riding through town on horseback, shrieking that she had died by her husband’s hand. Despite Sir John’s protestations of innocence, the hand of fate seems to be closing in, as more violent acts are perpetrated — including the death of his father — and his new bride (Heather Sears) is prepared to shoot him dead if he comes near her. All is revealed in the contrived climax — which plays out like a Gothic version of a “Scooby-Doo” episode. The filmmakers tried to punch things up with a plethora of cheap spook-house gimmicks but fail to disguise the threadbare plot. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi |

Weston, Tommy Granville, Jr., Big Tyme, Young Sears, Joe Trax.Houston, TX freestyle rapper Lil’ Flip started his own independent label to release his debut album, which quickly became an underground success story. In due course, the young MC attracted the attention of Sony, who offered major distribution for Flip’s label and this follow-up. Perhaps the most impressive thing about UNDAGROUND LEGEND is the way that Flip manages to maintain his underground, street-real flavor and uncompromising themes without ever resorting to gangsta cliches. Throughout the album, on such tracks as “What I Been Through,” “I Shoulda Listened,” and “Make Mama Proud,” Flip proves to be an exceptionally thoughtful philosophizer whose storytelling is filled with informed perspective and sound observations. While fully laying out the realities that lead to thug life, he declares that he’d rather kill his enemies with kindness and rather rap than fight. Positivity abounds here, not the dewy-eyed, pie-in-the-sky kind, but a positivity that feels earned and quite real. |

The difference, however, was crucial: Marty Balin was once again a fully integrated bandmember, writing or co-writing five of the ten tracks. And there can be little doubt that it was Balin’s irresistible ballad “Miracles,” the biggest hit single in the Jefferson Whatever catalog, that propelled Red Octopus to the top of the charts, the only Jefferson album to chart that high and the best-selling album in their collective lives. This must have been sweet vindication for Balin, who founded Jefferson Airplane but then drifted away from the group as it veered away from his musical vision. Now, the collective was incorporating his taste without quite integrating it — “Miracles,” with its strings and sax solo by nonband member Irv Cox, was hardly a characteristic Airplane/Starship track. But then, neither exactly was Papa John Creach’s showcase, “Git Fiddler,” or bassist Pete Sears’ instrumental “Sandalphon,” which sounded like something from an early Procol Harum album. Slick has three strong songs, among them the second single “Play on Love.” Like Dragon Fly, Red Octopus reflected a multiplicity of musical tastes; there were ten credited songwriters, seven of whom were in the band. If there is any consistency in this material, it is in subject matter (love songs). The album is more ballad-heavy and melodic than the Airplane albums, which made it more accessible to the broader audience it reached, though “Sweeter Than Honey” is as tough a rocker as the band ever played. ~ William Ruhlmann |

Accordingly, the film’s soundtrack is a contemporary urban endeavor full of hard-hitting but accessible hip-hop tracks from a variety of popular artists. There are a passel of top rappers, including Ludacris (”Act a Fool”), Fat Joe (”We Ridin’”), and Lil’ Flip (”Rollin’ On 20’s”). Naturally, the R&B side of things is represented as well, by the likes of K’Jon (the smoothly understated “Miami”) and of course Tyrese Himself (the scene-setting jumper “Pick up the Phone”), with assists from Ludacris and none other than R. Kelly). |
