Buster – Widescreen Subtitle $8.99 On August 8, 1963, the Royal Mail train, on its nighttime run from London to Glasgow, was robbed by 15 men who got away with 2.6 million pounds (today the equivalent of $35 million). Buster tells the story of one of the junior robbers, Buster Edwards (played by pop singer Phil Collins), in a crime that came to be known as the Great Train Robbery. The film details the planning of the famous heist, but its main concern is Buster’s relationship with his family and his devotion to his wife June (Julie Walters). The Edwards are like a British Kramden family, trying to make ends meet from day-to-day in their rental apartment, but instead of a bus driver, Buster is a two-bit thief who has the fine luck of hardly ever getting caught. After the Royal mail train robbery, the heat intensifies, since the Conservative Government, already smarting from the Profumo scandal, latches onto the train robbery as a means to deflect attention from the scandal by bringing the train robbers quickly to justice. Buster and June go into hiding and have a series of close calls before finally escaping to Mexico. Finally in paradise, the Edwards find their money quickly being eaten up and discover that they cannot adapt to the Mexico milieu. June, for her part, is homesick, and Buster, always ready to keep her happy, makes the grand gesture — to return to England and turn himself in to the police. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi |

Biography: Buster Keaton - $19.99 He began life as the child of a physically abusive and alcoholic vaudeville entertainer father, but somehow survived this tumult and spun himself into one of the most popular movie comedians outside of Charlie Chaplin. For a time, the “Great Stone Face,” as Buster Keaton came to be known, held court among Hollywood’s elite, and it seemed that his star might never dim. Yet tragically, enormous personal complications beset him, including struggles with mental illness and a drinking problem that threatened to end his career forever. All was not lost, however, for Keaton eventually rebounded into the limelight, with a spectacular career renaissance in the 1960s and the rerelease of his classic silent films; this regained popularity extended far beyond his death in 1966. The documentary special Biography: Buster Keaton tells this astonishing story by drawing from clips of Keaton’s films, archival footage of the great star and extensive interviews. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

Buster Keaton Double Feature - $12.99 Includes:Screen Directors’ Playhouse: The Silent Partner (1955) The Railrodder (1965) Screen Directors’ Playhouse: The Silent Partner “The Silent Partner” is, along with John Ford’s “Rookie of the Year”, perhaps the best-known episode of the TV anthology series Screen Directors’ Playhouse. Buster Keaton stars as Kelsey Dutton, a former silent-film comedian fallen upon hard times. While visiting a neighborhood tavern, Kelsey is recognized by Selma (ZaSu Pitts), herself an ex-actress. Their happy reunion is spoiled by the Academy Award telecast being shown on the bar’s TV set, in which prominent actor-director Arthur Vail (Joe E. Brown), accepting an Oscar, flippantly refers to Kelsey and Selma as washed-up hasbeens. As it turns out, however, Vail’s apparent cruelty has a noble purpose. Directed and cowritten by George Marshall, who in his movie heyday worked with the likes of Bob Hope, W.C. Fields and Laurel and Hardy, the film is at its best when recreating the Golden Days of silent slapstick comedy, of which Keaton was an acknowledged master. Unavailable for many years, The Silent Partner was put back in circulation for collectors and aficionados alike by Blackhawk Films in the mid-1970s. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The Railrodder “The Railrodder” is a silent comedy short which showcases the style that made Buster Keaton famous. ~ Rovi |

Classic Westerns: Buster Crabbe - $5.99 Includes:Sheriff of Sage Valley (1942) Fugitive of the Plains (1943) Western Cyclone (1943) Fuzzy Settles Down (1944) Sheriff of Sage Valley In this episode of the “Billy the Kid” series of westerns, outlaw Billy (Buster Crabbe) is mistakenly appointed Sage Valley’s new sheriff. He likes the job and works hard to maintain order. Unfortunately his crooked twin brother, who runs a casino and is in hiding after a murder, wants to keep the town a haven for crooks. To do this, he masquerades as Billy and starts causing trouble. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi Fugitive of the Plains Billy the Kid, in the person of former swimming champion Larry “Buster” Crabbe, is once again falsely accused of a crime in this low-budget oater from Poverty Row studio PRC. This time, the sheriff of Red Rock accuses the Kid (Karl Hackett) of terrorizing communities on the border to Mexico. Deciding to investigate the matter, Billy and sidekick Fuzzy Q. Jones (Al St. John) ride into Red Rock, where they stumble across a murdered deputy and a note claiming responsibility signed by “Billy the Kid.” Following a couple of mysterious riders to a nearby cabin, Billy is surprised to learn that the leader of a gang of outlaws is a woman named Kate (Maxine Leslie). She agrees to let Billy join the gang provided that he robs the stagecoach. Jealous henchman Dillon (Jack Ingram) attempts to get rid of his new rival by secretly warning the sheriff, but our hero once again eludes the law and is soon holed up in a cabin with Kate. When the girl flatly refuses to abandon her life of crime, Billy warns the sheriff of an upcoming raid on the bank. The town erupts in gunfire and when the dust settles, Kate and her gang are on the run for their lives. In the end, a mortally wounded Kate shoots Dillon to prevent him from killing Billy. Fugitive of the Plains was reissued in 1947 as Raiders of Red Rock. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi Western Cyclone In this “Billy the Kid” series western, Billy (Buster Crabbe) is framed by an outlaw gang. Fortunately, state governor Arnold (Karl Hackett) is in Billy’s corner, and surreptitiously helps Our Hero prove his innocence and bring the crooks to heel. But he’d better hurry: part of the bad guys’ frame involves the kidnapping of Mary (Marjorie Manners), the governor’s daughter. Al St. John as usual provides genuine laughs as Billy’s sidekick Fuzzy Q. Jones. Though Buster Crabbe’s PRC westerns were as a group pretty threadbare, Western Cyclone is definitely better than usual. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Fuzzy Settles Down In this western, Billy the Kid must convince Fuzzy not to leave the trail. Fuzzy tries anyway and buys a small-town newspaper. It doesn’t take him long to find himself accused of embezzling money from his new business. Unfortunately for Fuzzy, he is innocent. It is his pal the Kid that rides to his rescue, and kills the real embezzler. Fuzzy decides that newspaperin’ ain’t for him and so leaves the city and attempts to find a quiet place in the country. ~ S |
